Definition: Roots effected by fungus
Symptoms: Leaves turn yellow, early defoliation, white finger like tissue when cut around tree flare
Pathogen Type: Fungal
Effects: Damaged tree trunk and week roots.
Activity Duration: Kills tree in approximately 4 years (in sever conditions time can go as low as 1~2years)
Side Effects:
- Tree Growth: Damages roots up to tree flare and kills the tree
- Leaves: Leaves turn yellow and early defoliation
- Fruit: No effects
- New Buds: Lower rate of new buds and present branches dry up
- Root: Fungi growth occurs around root region and color varies from yellow to orange. Roots rot due fungal infection
Regional Features: Generally forest and woodland regions
Prevention:
- Dried up trees must be removed and disposed. Quicklime needs to be applied remaining holes
- If infection occurred in a specific region of the orchard to avoid contagion across other parts trenches with a depth of 60cm & width of 30cm must be opened.
- If infection occurred in neighboring orchards, to avoid contagion with flood etc.. trenches with a depth of 60cm & width of 30cm must be opened around the orchard.
- For orchards converted from forest regions, tree plantation needs to be done at least 2~3 years later than deforestation
- After the first rain of autumn, fungi caps, stalks and roots must be removed & disposed.
- Trees must not be planted too deep, over irrigated and roots damaged.
- If all above isn’t sufficient, respect to severity of fungal infection chemical treatments must be considered.
Treatment:
- If infection is fresh, infected roots needs to be removed and scraped then 5% Bordeaux mixture or 2% blue vitriol applied by brush around this parts. After application dried, damaged parts need to be covered with wax.
- If all roots are infected all roots are removed and burned in the root hole and closed by applying quicklime
- To avoid contagion with healthy trees around autumn or spring, dripline needs to be washed with 5% Bordeaux mixture.
